Estimated price, profit and margin

Estimates exclude tax, shipping, returns and other expenses unless included in cost.

Markup vs. margin

Markup is profit divided by cost. Margin is profit divided by selling price. A 50% markup on a $40 item produces a $60 price, $20 gross profit and a 33.33% gross margin.

Want a 50% margin instead?

For a $40 item, charge $80 to earn a 50% gross margin. A 50% markup would price it at only $60.

How do selling fees change your profit margin?

Suppose an item costs $40 and you apply a 50% markup. The selling price is $60, leaving $20 before other expenses. If the sale also incurs $6 in processing or marketplace fees, you keep $14 before other expenses: a 23.33% margin on the $60 sale. Include predictable per-item fees in the cost input when planning a new selling price, otherwise your estimate may be too high.
