Freelance rate: A $80,000 annual income goal plus $10,000 in yearly business costs, divided by 25 billable hours per week over 46 weeks, works out to $78.26 per billable hour before personal income tax. See the hourly-rate breakdown.
Project quote: A project taking 60 hours at $45 labor cost per hour, plus $500 of other costs, has a $3,200 cost base. Divide by (1 − 0.30) to aim for a 30% profit margin, giving a $4,571.43 quote. A margin is not the same as markup.
Subscription profit: For 350 paying customers at $29 per month, $4 direct cost each and $1,200 fixed monthly costs, the simplified monthly operating result is $7,550. Refunds, taxes and any unentered fees are excluded. Find subscription break-even.
Monthly profit target: To make $10,000 a month after $1,000 fixed costs, with $29 charged per customer and $4 variable cost each, you need at least 440 paying customers. The customer count is rounded up to a whole number.
What is included in these estimates?
Use each calculator to explore a pricing decision, then check the assumptions behind the result.
Costs you enter matter: Use monthly expenses for subscription estimates and annual expenses for freelance rates. Include relevant transaction fees, materials and other costs; the tools cannot know expenses you leave out.
Margin is different from markup: Margin divides profit by selling price, while markup divides profit by cost. Try the profit margin calculator and markup calculator with the same numbers to compare them.
